About the event
The fight against malaria in Africa is facing a perfect storm. Significant funding gaps, linked to the ongoing global financial crisis, are making it impossible to sustain even the current coverage of essential life-saving malaria interventions. Increasing levels of insecticide and drug resistance are further impacting the fight against malaria and although newer, highly effective commodities and approaches are available to address these threats, these are more expensive, which is pushing malaria elimination even further away. The impact of climate change with increased flooding and cyclones and humanitarian emergencies are also contributing to the reversal of hard-won gains.
In this context, the His Excellency, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, president of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau and ALMA Chair will convene fellow African Heads of State and Government at a fireside chat on the sidelines of the UNGA to highlight key opportunities and strategies to get malaria elimination back on track.
