About the video

On assuming the Chairmanship of ALMA for the period 2020 to 2022, His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta set his agenda outlining four key results-based priority areas. These are:

  • digitalisation to provide real time access to health-related data including sharing of scorecards for accountability and action at country level to facilitate evidence-informed policies and programmes
  • engagement with Regional Economic Communities as the key pillars to implement African Union malaria commitments
  • establishing End Malaria Councils and Funds to boost multisectoral action, accountability and resource mobilisation
  • creating an ALMA Youth Army to create a broader social movement to fight malaria, improve maternal and child health and improve access to universal healthcare

Under President Kenyatta’s leadership, African Union member states have made significant progress in the fight against malaria with 40 members states implementing national and subnational malaria scorecards in the past two years.

Across the continent, 23 countries have launched national ‘Zero Malaria Starts with Me!’ campaigns, a continental campaign uniting African Union member states in the vision of ending malaria by 2030.

Under resource mobilisation, 15 African Union member states have launched End Malaria Councils and Funds mobilising millions of dollars to support national malaria programmes.

Additionally, ALMA launched a continental Malaria Youth Strategy, paving the way for the roll out of national youth armies to mobilise young leaders to champion the fight against malaria.

This documentary, developed in partnership with the Presidential Service Communication Unit of the Republic of Kenya, provides a detailed account of this progress, featuring key milestones across a range of African Union members states.
